  • About Sk8SoniX

    Unique musical instrument for skaters.

Improve your edges & creative expression.

    Description

Sk8SoniX by Brainventions, Inc. is a one-of-a-kind Musical Instrument for creating music while figure skating. It consists of a pair of Sensor devices attached by Velcro to the bottom of figure skates. The sensors are connected by Bluetooth to the Sk8SoniX iOS app, which users can download from the App Store and run on iPhone or iPad. The sensor assemblies can be purchased directly from this website.

    How to Use

In the simplest of its application modes the Sk8SoniX app maps the 8 dynamic skating edges (Let/Right, Forward/Backward & Inside/Outside - LFO, RFI, LBI, RBO, LBO, RBI, LFI, RFO) to the 8 musical notes in the Major Musical Scale (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La Ti, Do'). The user can chose from a variety of SoundFonts (e.g. piano, violin, guitar, piccolo, solfege, etc.) to listen to her/his edges while skating. This provides unique auditory feedback, which can significantly improve the skaters skating skills.

Another usage mode provides a set of built-in detectors for moves-in-the-field (MIF), jumps, spins, twizels, swings, etc.

    Functionality

Sk8SoniX has built-in audio and video recording/playback as well as skating data storage and analytics.

Sk8Sonix is ideal for both beginner skaters to improve their skating skills and for advanced and top-level skaters who want to explore new creative ways for personal expression in shows and competitive programs.

  • Playing Tips

Here are some useful tips on how to play the Sk8SoniX musical instrument

    broken image

    Think "Reverse Piano"

    The basic principle

While playing a piano the "resting/silent" state is having your fingers OFF the keyboard. While playing the Sk8SoniX your resting/quiet state is having both skates ON the ice. To play a note on the piano you PRESS a KEY. To play a note on the Sk8SoniX you LIFT a SKATE off the ice. The note, which correspond to the edge you are currently on will play.

    From Edges to Notes

A universal mapping of Skating to Music Playing

Simple - the 8 dynamic skating edges (Let/Right, Forward/Backward & Inside/Outside a.k.a. LFO, RFI, LBI, RBO, LBO, RBI, LFI, RFO) correspond one-to-one to the 8 musical notes in the Major Musical Scale (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La Ti, Do').

    Repeating Notes

    Chasses, swing rolls, leg scratches

Passing repeatedly a single key on the piano to play the corresponding note corresponds to lifting the left or right leg repeatedly to play the note mapped to the skating edge. Try Twinkle Twinkle Little Star!

    Playing the C-Major Scale

    Skate a figure 8

To play the Major Musical Scale (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La Ti, Do') simply skate this edge sequence: LFO, RFI, LBI, RBO, LBO, RBI, LFI, RFO. On the ice it draws a figure 8.

    Listening Options

Solo, Duet or the entire Rink

There are at least 3 options on how to listen to your edges play the notes. 1) Carry your iPhone with a wired headset. 2) Leave iPhone off the ice and use a Bluetooth headset. 3) iPhone off the ice connected by audio wire or Bluetooth to the rink's audio system - everyone can hear your edges:-)

From Sheet Music to Skating Edge Patterns

    Happy Birthday SKATRONIX

  • Privacy Statement

At Brainventions, we believe privacy is a fundamental human right.

Your personal data belongs to you, not others.

Whether you’re listening to your skates, recording your moves, or sharing with your skating partner, you can do it knowing that Brainventions doesn’t gather your personal information to sell to advertisers or other organizations.

Your features improve while your data stays private.

When we use data to create better experiences for you, we work hard to do it in a way that doesn’t compromise your privacy.

Whether you store it or send it, your data is protected.

Sk8SoniX provides a feature to save your skating data, which is generated by the Sensors mounted on the skating booths. The data is saved as a CSV file and stored on your iPhone. Only you have access to your data. You can of course decide to share it with us to be used as foundation for further app development and improvements.

Your apps play by your rules.

Sk8SoniX requires access to the microphone and the video camera on your iPhone and used Bluetooth to communicate with the sensors. When the app launched for the first time you are prompted to provide access to these peripherals. These settings are stored automatically but you can change them at any time.
